Separating the ball joints on the Caprice (and almost all old GM cars) requires a special tool to remove without damaging any components. The nut on the given ball joint must be loosened, and then the tapered shaft from the ball joint must be pushed out. While it is possible to separate the ball joint with a hammer, it can cause damage.
Using a strong piece of solid steel, and a half-inch bolt, the ball joints can be removed easily with two wrenches. Below is a sketch of the ball joint separation tool I made.
It should be noted that the ball joint will separate very suddenly, and usually makes a loud banging noise.
A simple ball joint separator. Anti-seize should be put on the threads of the bolt.
