Lifter Valley
Like most older engine blocks, this one has a lot of casting flash. One of the oil drain holes at the back of the lifter valley had a lot of flash, and some of it could be broken off just by pressing on it. I took a small drill with a grinding bit and cleaned up the hole a bit, to prevent pieces from breaking off while the engine is running.

A quick pass with a drill cleaned up the drain holes in the lifter valley.
Painting
For whatever reason, I decided to paint the engine after putting in the crank. I carefully covered up the bottom and top of the engine with newspaper, and put grease in each freeze plug so that paint would not adhere. I decided to paint it black. It turned out real well and the black helps hide a lot of the flash and pitting from the stone age block casting.
